Role Title: Staff Nurse: Theatre and Operating Theatre Department Job Reference Number:000840 Closing Date:Sunday, 8th December 2024 Purpose of the Role: The post holder works as part of the multidisciplinary team, establishing and maintaining good working relationships aimed at delivering high standard of care.
The post holder is required to develop additional clinical skills pertinent to the specialty.
The post holder is responsible for managing the care of patients and the needs of their families, ensuring quality is maintained.
The post holder is expected to participate in appropriate education and research requirements.
Key Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities To be accountable and responsible for own actions and know the content of the Scope of Practice for Nursing and Midwifery, Code of Professional Conduct, St. Jamess Hospital policies, guidelines, and competencies relevant to practice.
Is aware and understands the need to adhere to Hospital and/or professional standards, policies and procedures, relevant to there are of practice.
Communicates effectively in English language, written and spoken, as appropriate to job requirements.
To provide nursing care to patients by the use of an individual system of care and working with nursing standards which have been agreed.
To keep the nurse in charge of the unit aware of any relevant changes which occur.
To develop an understanding of the specialty and following an induction programme eventually be able to assist in all relevant procedures.
To promote and uphold nursing standards by identifying/recommending changes which will enhance the quality of care.
To interpret the significance of the patients clinical observations and record and plan desired changes in care with senior staff.
To maintain professional confidentiality and ensure all clinical and legal documents are accurate and legible.
Participate and cooperate with legislative and regulatory requirements in relation to Health and Safety as outlined in the Safety, Health and Welfare Act 2005 and the Hospital Safety Statement.
Managerial Monitors all complaints/incidents.
Informs Theatre Manager on same to enable: a full investigation of same, counselling of staff as appropriate, the possible instigation of measures to negate a re-occurrence, and constant evaluation of standards of patient care, and particularly nursing care within the department.
To maintain supervision of junior nursing staff during each span of duty, providing direction and supports as necessary.
To undertake management experience with the support of mentor or Clinical Nurse Manager.
To adhere to Hospital policies and maintain effective links with support services and other departments.
To assist with the development and maintenance of standards of care and quality assurance programmes.
To maintain a sound working knowledge of emergency policies, including cardiac arrest protocol, fire emergency, control of infection policy, static electricity, explosion hazards, and major disaster plan.
Ensures all staff are aware of the Contingency Plans in the event of a total loss of power, fire, and evacuation.
Professional To accept responsibility for own personal/professional development and be aware of current trends and strategies in nursing.
To manage the total nursing care of patients competently and be responsible for professional actions.
To display and uphold nursing standards and identify changes, which will enhance the quality of care.
To help develop a culture conducive to the establishment and maintenance of good staff morale.
To promote good industrial relations in accordance with personnel policies.
Education and Research To promote a learning environment and encourage professional development.
To follow current developments in nursing which will increase professional knowledge and skills.
To identify potential areas for nursing research within specialty, which will benefit patient care.
To be aware of own learning needs and ensure a learning programme is negotiated with mentor.
To attend appropriate study days/courses that will promote professional developments.
To participate in own performance review with the Theatre Superintendent.
To be able to teach and act as a mentor (after appropriate training) to other nursing staff.
To participate in the revision of policies/guidelines/competencies.
Ensure own mandatory learning and training is kept up to date.

Required: Be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
AND Minimum of 6 months experience (postgraduate or undergraduate) in Medical/Surgical nursing in an acute hospital/relevant clinical area within the past 3 years.
Note: Post holders must maintain annual registration with NMBI.
Demonstrate I.T.
skills including excellent keyboard skills.
Desired: Experience in peri-operative nursing.
Postgraduate qualification in peri-operative nursing.
Working knowledge of healthcare patient record systems.
Basic life support.
