American Chamber of Commerce Ireland Response to National Energy Demand StrategyNational Energy Demand Strategy DecisionThis decision paper represents Ireland's first National Energy Demand Strategy (NEDS) and sets out the next steps for its development and implementation. The strategy builds on the input received from stakeholders in response to the recent NEDS consultations, in addition to contributions from a range of Government Departments, State Agencies and energy system operators, ESB Networks (ESBN), EirGrid and Gas Networks Ireland (GNI). The NEDS focuses on progressing initiatives that can contribute towards demand flexibility in the short term, in addition to defining the longer-term strategic plan. Demand response can deliver consumer benefits across the "energy trilemma" (cost, security of supply, and sustainability). By shifting demand away from times when renewable generation is low to times when renewable generation is high, less carbon will be emitted, overall costs will be lower and the energy system will be more secure. This is because when renewable output is high, wholesale energy prices tend to be lower, overall carbon emissions lower, and total available generation higher than times when the system is more reliant on fossil-fuel-powered generation.
