The Wireless Sensor Network Group (WSN) at the Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork is currently advertising for the position of Applications Engineer in embedded systems for reconfigurable, Sustainable and Wearable IOT.
As part of the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre CONNECT, the Wireless Sensor Networks group at the Tyndall National Institute, in conjunction with the School of Computer Science in University College Cork is currently advertising for the position of Applications Engineer in embedded systems for reconfigurable, Sustainable and Wearable IOT for use in applications in healthcare, security, environmental monitoring, citizen science through enabling the development of wearable and sustainable interconnected sensing devices.
Reconfigurable Sensing for wearable & sustainable IOTThere is clear potential for e-textiles to replace existing rigid wearable technology and to deliver improved performance and user experience, thus enabling it to capture a larger part of the global wearable technology market valued at $120 billion in 2021. However, innovative materials and fabrication methodologies need to be implemented in order to address current limitations associated with the stringent requirements of electrical conductivity, flexibility, functionality, robustness, and cost-effectiveness.
This project aims to develop novel reconfigurable wearable sensing systems for use in biosensing applications.
Reporting to the Human Centric Systems Director (and WSN Head of Group) or his nominee, the successful candidate will work with senior researchers to help develop and implement the research agenda associated with reconfigurable wearable embedded systems. The HCS Cluster is comprised of Scientists, engineers, researchers and postgraduate students with various levels of experience and qualifications.
Key ResponsibilitiesIn conjunction with appropriate research groups across Tyndall, the successful candidate will drive research in wearable and reconfigurable embedded sensing systems, specifically in the area of sustainable sensing and wearable IOT applications.The candidate will be in charge of the day-to-day applied R&D and technical project management of research projects related to wearable embedded systems.Engage with national and international partners to form new research partnerships.Ensuring the successful completion of research projects in terms of technical deliverables, publications, and dissemination of results.Supervise and mentor relevant interns, staff and students working in the area.Enhance Tyndall's position internationally in wearable technologies reconfigurable sensor systems.Publish in Tier-1 journals and conferences in the field of wearable electronics, sensors, systems, applications and materials.Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.Essential CriteriaMinimum requirement of a Research Masters degree in Electrical/Electronic/Biomedical engineering or relevant field.Typically 3+ years experience and a demonstrated track record in the development of wearable systems development – hardware and software.Typically 3+ years demonstrated experience in clinical trial execution investigating wearable data acquisition systems for healthcare applications.Good publication record with a minimum of 10 authored/co-authored articles in peer reviewed publications.Typically 3+ years experience and a strong knowledge of data science for wearable/biomedical systems with experience in machine learning algorithm design (Python, R, MATLAB).Desirable CriteriaEvidence of entrepreneurial experience.Evidence of creative skills/creativity.The successful candidate will be highly systematic and motivated with good organizational skills and be self-managed and achievement oriented.High levels of initiative, self-management, achievement-orientation, and motivation are desirable.Excellent communication skills (oral and written).Capability of working effectively within a team to achieve results.The candidate will need to have demonstrated a strong capability for research project development, implementation, and management.Excellent Project Management skills are a key requirement including, research proposal writing, work package and deliverable definition, project management, scheduling capability, report writing, documentation and communication skills for interaction with internal and external partners are essential.Strong ability for proposal writing, forming new international partnerships and defining new research capabilities.Ability to resource and attract new talent to the team and the ability to define new infrastructure development.Tyndall National institute has a proactive entrepreneurial culture and we welcome applications from candidates who possess entrepreneurial and creative skills/experience, including the creation of technology start-ups.
This is a 1 year fulltime Application Engineering Position (Research Engineer) in the Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, with the successful candidate on approved UCC salary Scales for Application Engineering staff.
Appointment may be made on the Grade 5 Admin V Scale (B) range € 49,299 - € 60,476 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
