The Gallery is also home to Ireland's national art research collections held in the Gallery's extensive library and archives.
These important collections, which document the nation's rich artistic and cultural heritage and support the study of art history and visual culture, are held in the National Gallery's Fine Art library, Institutional archives, Centre for the Study of Irish art, Yeats archive and Sir Denis Mahon Library and Archive.
The Library & Archives department is responsible for the management, care and provision of access to these collections for research and study and also oversees a wide-ranging engagement programme.

The Gallery wishes to recruit an Assistant Archivist to support the central role research plays in the Gallery and contribute to the management and care of the archives and special collections we hold in trust for future generations.
Reporting to the Archivist and working as part of the Library & Archive Team, the successful candidate will: • Work with the Archivist to ensure the management of archive collections and related initiatives align with and support the Gallery's strategic plan.

• Support processing, cataloguing, documentation, discovery and interpretation of all archival and special collections

• Contribute to the development of collection management and DAMS systems including archive management system (CALM), KOHA library system, Portfolio and other in-house systems, as appropriate

• Oversee the accessioning of new material into the archive collections

• Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures which will ensure the long term preservation of and access to the archive collections

• Work closely and collaborate with the broader library and archive team on matters relating to collection care, development, management, access and engagement

• Support the development of the Centre for the Study of Irish Art, as the leading research centre for the study of Irish art and the trusted repository for the preservation and care of Irish art archives

• Contribute to digitisation programmes and the development digital collections and resources

• Actively promote and raise awareness about the research collections and services in the Gallery and support the development of the library and archives engagement activities and collaborations, both on-site, off-site and online.

• Actively contribute to the general development of the Library & Archives, supporting day-to-day operations, researcher services and dealing with enquiries

• Carry out other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned

The successful candidate will have: • A post-graduate qualification in archive management, information management or related field

• Familiarity with handling, organising and processing archival collections

• Experience working with archive systems and standards, in particular CALM

• Experience dealing with researchers and working in a library, archive or similar environment

• An interest in art history, Irish visual arts, archives and special collections

• Excellent organisation and time management skills coupled with ability to multi-task and work under pressure

• A keen interest in research and strong written communication skills

• A collaborative approach to work and an ability to work as part of a team or on own initiative

• Excellent IT systems and digital skills

• An enthusiasm and interest in working in a cultural institution and a willingness to contribute to a positive working environment

Citizenship Requirements Eligible candidates must be:

1.
A citizen of the European Economic Area (EEA).
The EEA consists of the Member States of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway; or

A citizen of the United Kingdom (UK); or

3.
A citizen of Switzerland, pursuant to the agreement between the EU and Switzerland on the free movement of persons; or

4.
A non-EEA citizen who has a Stamp 4 permission or a Stamp 5 permission.

Please note: A 50 TEU permission, which serves as a replacement for Stamp 4EUFAM after Brexit, is considered equivalent to Stamp 4.

Job Details and Application Information Grade and Salary: The salary for this position will be in accordance with the Engineer Grade III / Assistant Keeper II (PPC) pay scale, as per the 1 October 2024 pay adjustments.
The salary scale for this position is as follows:

€38,083 - €40,580 - €41,248 - €44,580 - €47,924 - €51,275 - €54,739 - €56,925 - €59,123 - €61,338 - €63,541 - €65,750 - €67,959 - €70,160 - €72,381 - €74,834¹ - €77,284²

¹ After 3 years satisfactory service at the maximum.

² After 6 years satisfactory service at the maximum.

· The starting salary will be at the first point on the scale, €38,083 per annum.

· Candidates should note the National Gallery of Ireland complies with Department of Public Expenditure and Reform regulations and guidelines on Public Service pay and conditions of employment.

Duration: Permanent

Working hours: Full time, 5 days a week – 35 hours per week (net of breaks).
Please note, flexibility is required and the successful candidate may be required to work occasional early mornings, late evenings and weekends.
