Job Description The Associate Practitioner works in the areas of routine histology processing.
The Associate Practitioner works under direct supervision when training in the microtomy, block check, embedding, and immunohistochemistry set-up benches.
Direct supervision means a trained and competent Medical Scientist is in direct proximity to the Associate Practitioner trainee.
After completing a training program and being deemed competent by the Chief Medical Scientist and the Consultant Head of Department, or their deputy, the trainee may perform microtomy, embedding, block check, and immunohistochemistry set-up under indirect supervision.
Indirect supervision means a trained and competent Medical Scientist is on site and is available should the Associate Practitioner need their guidance.
Remote supervision is reserved for immunohistochemistry set-up.
Once an Associate Practitioner is trained and deemed competent in the set-up of the immunohistochemistry processor, any queries they may have may be answered remotely (i.e.
via telephone) by a trained and competent Medical Scientist.
The Associate Practitioner may perform clerical and laboratory aide duties.
These duties do not require the same level of supervision as when performing duties in routine histology processing. You will also support the delivery of a quality laboratory service in compliance with the requirements of international standard ISO 15189 in the Histology laboratory.
