Mallow General Hospital (MGH) is a Model 2 hospital as defined by the Acute Medicine Programme.
MGH serves a population of North Cork and surrounding areas with a population of circa 90,000.

Mallow General Hospital is a 71 bed Acute General Hospital providing inpatient, outpatient and day patient services.
The services provided in the hospital include general medicine, cardiology, respiratory, gerontology, gastroenterology, dermatology and palliative care.
Mallow General Hospital also provides elective Day Surgery and Endoscopy.
A Day Ward provides for the admission of selected patients on an elective basis for care and / or treatment who do not require the use of a hospital bed overnight and who are discharged as scheduled.
Surgical planned procedures include General Surgery, Urology, ENT, Vascular and Dental Special Needs Adult.
A Pre-Assessment Clinic supports the surgical day service.
Mallow General Hospital is supported by an Injuries Unit and a Medical Assessment Unit.
Specialist nursing includes Cardiology, Respiratory, Diabetes, and Tissue Viability, Care of the Older Adult, Haemovigilance and Infection Control.
Purpose of Post The purpose of this Clinical Nurse Specialist (IBD) post is to:
Provide support for an increasing cohort of 500 IBD patients in Mallow General Hospital, which will improve the continuity of patient care and act as a reliable and responsive point of contact to support patient education to improve patient outcomes.
The role when established may also be incorporated into the wider gastroenterology department and various pathways developed to improve access to care for these patients.
Deliver care in line with the five core concepts of the role set out in the Framework for the Establishment of Clinical Nurse Specialist Posts, 4th edition, National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery (NCNM) 2008.
Caseload The Clinical Nurse Specialist (IBD) will manage an in-patient and out-patient caseload of adult patients with Inflammatory Bowel disease.
In conjunction with the clinicians the post holder will provide expertise and specialist nursing services to this select group of patients.
The primary focus of the post holder will be to ensure that patients and their carers receive accurate and timely information within a planned and co-ordinated approach to appropriate care.
To contribute to the quality of care experienced by patients through the practice of evidence based specialist care
To improve patient outcomes through provision of information, education and psychological support
To evaluate the quality of service provided through participating in on-going clinical audit and research
To manage a cohort of patients with complex inflammatory bowel disease.
