Job Overview Acute Surgical Assessment Units (ASAU), as defined in the NCPS Acute Model of Care 2013 (RCSI Press, 2012), set out a process whereby considerable efficiency and safety benefits may accrue to acutely ill surgical patients.
The ASAU constitutes one component of the Acute Floor which also includes an ED, Resuscitation Unit and Acute Medical Unit as well as an age related assessment unit.
ASAUs are designed to deal with a significant throughput of acutely unwell surgical patients, not unwell to the level where they require active resuscitation.
Category 1s and 2 patients (Manchester Triage System) will continue through the ED/resuscitation streams.
The primary aim of an ASAU as set out in the Minimum Standards for Acute Surgical Assessment Units in Ireland (NCPS, 2023) is to deliver Senior Decision Making early in the pathway of selected acute surgical patients.
Treatment may either be on the spot, by ambulatory or outpatient care or patients may require admission.
The role of the ASAU CNM2 is to manage the department, support patients, relatives and staff through the provision of clinical, managerial and educational excellence.
The CNM2 will play a pivotal role in the co-ordination and management of activity and resources associated with ASAU.
They will work in partnership with all staff members including the Directorate Nurse Manager, CNM3, Director of Nursing, Site Nurse Managers (SNM), Clinical Director /Specialty Consultants and the inter/trans-disciplinary teams to maintain , develop and improve patient centered, quality, safe care.
Qualifications & Experience Candidates must: Be a Registered General Nurse on the live register of nurses maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or eligible to be registered. Have at least 5 years post registration experience, of which 2 must be in the Acute Services. Post registration course or experience in a nursing specialty is desirable. Desirable to have management experience. A management course essential or commitment to undertake same. Computer skills essential. Display evidence of continuing professional development.
