The post holder will manage patients on the Acute care wards. You will also be expected to supervise the ward juniors and to undertake procedures and review referrals on other medical and surgical and outlying wards. There will also be an expectation to regularly attend outpatient clinics and to discuss patients with the clinic's Consultant.
As a senior employee of the Health Board the post holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Health Board's patients.
Main duties of the job The appointee will have regular exposure to acute general medicine and will be encouraged to attend out-patient clinics in Older Person's Medicine and the osteoporosis services. Medicine is the largest division within the Trust providing a fully integrated service in emergency, acute, general and elderly care medicine, older persons' mental health, palliative care and child health.
Duties include the day-to-day management of patients, including clerking, arranging investigations and dictating discharge summaries. Attendance at 2 outpatient clinics weekly is expected to ensure a broad spectrum of experience is obtained.
In addition to clinical duties the candidate will spend approximately two sessions per week teaching undergraduates medical students and will be trained as a simulation training faculty member whilst in post.
The Specialist Doctor in Care of The Elderly will provide senior expertise within Care of the Elderly and be able to manage the full range of presentations in their specific area of practice. An autonomous practice framework will be agreed along with this job description summary, which will outline the defined level of competency for the post holder in relation to independent and autonomous practice. A Consultant mentor will be provided for support.
We would expect the post holder to work flexibly and supportively with all members of the team. Elderly medicine training may be required periodically for members of the team.
