The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is seeking a senior lawyer with the necessary expertise, professional experience and strategic leadership skills to lead the Division that is tasked with assessing investigation files to decide whether to direct a prosecution.
Reporting to the Deputy Director, the successful candidate will have strategic oversight of the Office's casework and provide a central role in advising the Director and Deputy Director on key strategic prosecutorial policy issues. They will have overall responsibility for the directing function and two specialist Units within the Office – the Serious and Sexual Offences Unit and the Special Financial Crime Unit. This is a centrally important role in the Irish Prosecution Service and an opportunity to be part of the leadership team in the ODPP at a time of growth and change. The Head of Directing and Specialist Units will take a lead role in implementing reform and transformation projects identified in the current strategic plan, including driving the development of cross-functional ways of working across the Office, the sector and internationally.
Minimum Requirements:Have practiced as a barrister or solicitor for at least six years out of the last 12 years at a level of achievement expected for this senior post. Periods spent in whole-time positions in the Public Service for appointment to which qualification as a barrister or solicitor was an essential requirement will be reckoned as practice for this purpose.And will have:
Professional achievement and experience as a lawyer at a level which demonstrates that they are capable of meeting the leadership demands of this very senior post, as well as a good understanding of criminal practice and prosecution principles;The aptitude to adopt a system-wide approach and see potential for innovation and a strong appreciation of the opportunities and demands of increased digitisation as it relates to the criminal justice sector;A proven record of contributing to and delivering on strategic decisions which have positively impacted their organisation or sector's performance;Proven ability to build and maintain strong strategic professional relationships with both internal and external stakeholders with excellent influencing skills.This is a Top Level Appointments Committee (TLAC) position.
