Team/Role Overview The Lead Counsel is a senior level position responsible for providing Irish and European law advice, counsel and support to Citibank Europe PLC (CEP), one of Ireland's largest banks by balance sheet; which is active in Europe across 22 branches. The overall objective of this role is to support the CEP General Counsel and the Ireland franchise in managing legal and regulatory risk relevant to the Citi franchise. This role is a unique role and provides a great opportunity for the right candidate to become a general banking lawyer at one of the world's largest banking institutions. It provides an opportunity for someone with expertise in certain aspects of the areas in which Citi operates, to gain a broader understanding of a globally significant bank's operations. The role requires someone who is collegiate, is intellectually curious, is good at forming and maintaining close working relationships and has the energy to invest time into understanding the needs and expectations of Citi and its businesses in Europe.
What you'll do You will work as a team player in managing matters and over time will manage matters independently, input into strategic decisions, and exercise sound legal judgement to develop proactive, risk-appropriate, and commercially practical business-oriented solutions. The role is in large part a problem-solving role, focused on providing commercially effective advice to the legal entity and businesses, and working to ensure effective governance and regulatory compliance.
Work as One Legal, with Legal colleagues in Ireland, the UK and across Europe to support CEP and relevant businesses on all matters of legal and regulatory risk and to ensure effective governance and regulatory compliance.Support strategic initiatives of the businesses and functions by providing guidance and interpretations of relevant laws, rules, regulations, and industry practices, and advising business management on legal matters impacting the business.Collaborate across internal lines of business, control/support functions and/or external counsel to achieve coordinated and efficient outcomes on matters of common interest, coordinates closely with Legal team members, as appropriate.Partner with Citi Country Officers and country management to support Citi's maintaining of good relations with local regulators and all other local regulatory bodies that are relevant to Citi business activities.Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets.Drive compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behaviour conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.What we'll need from you Relevant industry experience, preferably in financial services.Excellent leadership, interpersonal, organizational and relationship management skills.Proven ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously in a demanding, fast-paced environment.Comprehensive knowledge of international, multi-jurisdictional laws and practices while staying abreast of regulatory and legal environment, internal policies and industry trends that impact the business.Effective communication and negotiation skills and ability to maintain trusted relationships.Membership of local Bar/Lawyers Association.What we can offer you By joining Citi Dublin, you will not only be part of a business casual workplace with a hybrid working model (up to 2 days working at home per week), but also receive a competitive base salary (which is annually reviewed) and enjoy a whole host of additional benefits that support you (and your family) to be well, live well and save well.
