Led by Dr Tomás Ó Carragáin, the project team includes academics at UCC (Dr Griffin Murray, John Sheehan, Dr Pat Meere) and Queens University Belfast (Dr Patrick Gleeson), as well as state bodies, private sector collaborators and community groups. The project is enhancing both the academic understanding and public appreciation of late prehistoric and early medieval carved stone monuments (AD 1–1200) in Ireland, from Late Iron Age 'idols' to early medieval cross slabs and high crosses. We are integrating and enriching existing records of carved stones from across the island. The utility of the island-wide database is being demonstrated through case studies of internationally important collections of carved stones.
