Position Description The DMSO Design group within DMSO in ESB Networks has been established to deliver the capabilities needed in ESB Networks (people, processes, and systems) to change how the electricity distribution system is developed to incorporate flexible services and the development of the flexible services market. This includes in particular:
The design and introduction of market design and operational solutions to coordinate ESBN local system management with TSO and SEM activities. The establishment of technical standards and requirements for new technologies and services, so they can be securely integrated into distribution system operations. A core objective of the DMSO is to establish the technical capabilities within ESBN and the appropriate market design and operational coordination with the TSO, to enable participation of all customers in markets. This is an exciting and innovative area, and we are seeking applications from individuals who are interested in playing an active role in establishing these new capabilities in our organisation and our industry.
The Power System Requirements team in DMSO Design is responsible for identifying the needs of, and challenges to, the power system. These are established through robust power system studies and analysis, in addition to working with stakeholders - in particular in the existing Network Planning area - and also within EirGrid. A primary focus of the Power Systems Requirements team in the medium to long term is to assess the impact of load profiles on network congestion with a view to identifying how flexible services can assist in addressing same.
Key Responsibilities The Technical support staff member will be responsible for:
Working with the Power System Technical Specialist in developing a good understanding of the key technical issues which need to be addressed on the power system. Working with the PSS team in E&MP to analyse any studies being undertaken there, including more complex studies such as dynamic or short circuit level work. Undertaking power flow studies and analysis specifically aimed at assessing the duration of network congestion issues and identifying potential flexible services solutions. Research into various technologies that are being used around the world and their impact on Power Systems. Working with the Market Development team to ensure that product development and capacities sought from the market are aligned with power system needs. Working with the Flexible Operations team to ensure that near-time and real-time system operations are aligned with longer-term plans for flexible services procurement. Working with the Product strategy team to assist in assessing the impact on the Power System of any new initiatives (such as those designed to meet our climate action targets). Experience and Qualifications A primary Engineering Qualification or equivalent work experience. Full clean Driving License. A minimum of 5+ years of relevant work experience. Capable of building new electricity network/system models, using a range of different modelling tools or packages. Good knowledge of power systems (including network and system characteristics and parameters). Good interpersonal skills. Good presentation, and communication skills. Ability to work on own initiative, taking ownership of work/projects. Experience of modelling power systems and undertaking load flow analysis. Experience in using PSS Sincal. Experience in Network Planning. Data analytics capability. Knowledge of the Operations Management System. Location Leopardstown Road. Attendance at base will be required 1-2 days every week and occasionally more as required for the job.
