Our Purpose At our Medtronic, plc, R&D (Research & Development) Department in Galway, Ireland, we focus on the development of cutting-edge medical devices in the Coronary, Structural Heart, PVH, Cardiac Rhythm Management and Neuromodulation space. Our R&D Engineers are directly involved in working on the development of innovative products for use in medical procedures.
Medtronic pioneered the field of neuromodulation with the first commercially available spinal cord stimulation (SCS) to treat chronic pain and engineered the first deep brain stimulation (DBS) system to treat disorders such as Parkinson's disease. We have gone on to develop the first implantable drug pump for the delivery of medication directly to the intrathecal space of the spine, inventing the first balloon kyphoplasty devices for the treatment of vertebral compression fractures and developing RF ablation systems to treat spinal tumors.
Come for a job, stay for a career! A Day in The Life Of: Within our R&D Department in Medtronic Neuromodulation, one key area of focus for reducing pain for patients is Interventional Pain. Interventional Pain develops minimally invasive therapies that treat musculoskeletal pathologies such as vertebral compression fractures, nerve pain, metastatic and benign bone tumors. The employee will be part of a team that defines, develops and tests new products for the Neuromodulation business.
Contribute to developing products for use in medical procedures as defined / required by the business needs of the company.Responsible for establishing the most effective, reliable, and cost-effective processing methods for manufacturing operation.Provide technical support to product and process development and on field related activities such as clinical programs and complaint investigations.Design, develop, analyse, troubleshoot, and provide technical skills during research and / or product development.Lead design and technical reviews with cross-functional partners.Plan and implement the introduction of new products, in line with marketing research as part of multidisciplinary teams.Ensure the logical and systematic conversion of product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical rigor, schedule, and cost constraints.Support the introduction / implementation of product / process / materials changes to the manufacturing operation.Participate in sourcing, testing and approving materials.Design studies and labs to investigate specific life science questions within your field of expertise.Provide direction and be responsible for deliverables from suppliers and vendors.Troubleshoot equipment and product issues that occur during day-to-day R&D work to provide technical solutions.Translate market and product research discoveries into usable and marketable products.Mentor junior engineers and/or technicians.Key Skills & Experience Level 8 Degree in Engineering / Science or related discipline with minimum 2 years relevant direct engineering experience.Medical device technology experience, ideally in interventional vascular devices would be advantageous.Experience in biomedical materials, processing knowledge and medical device design procedures.A proven track record in innovative design, product development and manufacturing.A dynamic team player who can work effectively and proactively on cross-functional teams and on various R&D projects.Ability to clearly document work, articulate and present ideas and tests results to a variety of audiences.Physical Job Requirements
