Research Assistant In Cryogenic Cmos Ic Design

Details of the offer

Research Assistant in Cryogenic CMOS IC Design Full Time/Fixed Term Microelectronic Circuits Centre Ireland (MCCI) is an EI / IDA technology centre hosted at Tyndall National Institute. Its mission is to carry out industry-led world-class Analog, Mixed-Signal and RF integrated circuit research and to deliver trained people and IP to industry. MCCI is collaborating with 35 companies and many of the staff eventually transfer into the thriving microelectronics industry in Ireland. MCCI targets real-life applications with its research and currently has projects in diverse topics such as Cryo-CMOS, med-tech, bio-sensing, wireless communication, ultra-low power circuits and power-management. Please visit www.mcci.ie for more information.

The project Traditional quantum computing implementations employ quantum processors operating near absolute zero temperature (between 20 and 230omK). On the other hand, the readout circuits, that read the quantum processor states, operate at room temperature (273oK). This imposes integration limitations due to the gap in operating temperatures. Cryogenic CMOS (Cryo-CMOS) operating at 4K have emerged as a solution to the quantum processor + readout circuit integration. Analogue-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) are essential building blocks in the design of quantum processor's readouts. At the Microelectronic Circuits Centre Ireland (MCCI), we are developing innovative ADCs capable of operating at cryogenic temperatures (4K) while displaying excellent linearity (70dB+), high sampling rate (1GS/s+) and sub-milliwatt power dissipation. This ADCs, and the corresponding auxiliary circuits such as voltage reference, LDOs, comparators, will enable the next generation of integrated quantum computers.

The Role The successful candidate will be based at MCCI in the Tyndall National Institute, Cork. He/she will assist in the modelling, designing and testing of Cryo-CMOS circuits for quantum computing applications, which include but are not limited to Comparators, ADCs, bandgap references, LDOs, etc.

What we offer You will have the opportunity to work on the design of state-of-the-art Cryo-CMOS circuits for quantum computing applications. Work as a highly valuable research team member in a world-class technology centre that has a very young, dynamic, vibrant and self-driven work environment that focuses on high impact research results which are strongly aligned to industry partners. Great career development and advancement that is highly visible to the semiconductor industry through direct contact or IEEE publications. Engage in collaboration with industry working on circuit interfaces for quantum computing applications. Opportunity to attend and publish work at leading conferences such as IEEE Solid-State Circuits and Systems Conferences (CAS), etc. Attend training courses and workshops, use the latest industry CAD design tools. Excellent working conditions. Key Responsibilities Propose and develop innovative analogue mixed signal circuit solutions capable of operating at cryogenic temperatures (4K). CMOS circuit design and tapeout of ICs. Silicon validation and debugging of multiple IC designs using state of the art cryostats at 4K. Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities. Ensure compliance with Tyndall's Quality Management, and Health and Safety standards. Perform additional duties as required within the scope of the post. Essential Criteria Master's Degree in Electronics Engineering with typically 2 years' experience in Analog, Mixed-Signal integrated circuit design. Evidence of experience with Cryo-CMOS circuit testing at 4K. Demonstrable Printed Circuit Board (PCB) experience for Cryogenic CMOS applications. Experience using integrated circuit design tools such as Cadence/Mentor. The successful candidate will be highly analytical with good interpersonal and organisational skills. Experience working as part of a team. Desirable Criteria PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Experience with lab testing of integrated circuits. Good mathematical ability and knowledge of statistics. Previous use of mathematical modelling tools such as MATLAB or Python. Appointment will be made on the Research Assistant scale €31,462- €41,443 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
