Overview of role: UPMC Whitfield is recruiting a Resident Medical Officer on a part-time, permanent basis.
This position is 24 hours per week.
This role is suitable for doctors who wish to pursue a career in these specialties and are in the early stages of their careers preparing for examinations or conducting research activities.
The person in this role would acquire significant experience and exposure to a large variety of elective procedures in pre-op, intra-op, and post-operative settings.
This role involves regular daily attendance and participation in resident on-call rosters.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Clinical Duties:Provide medical services within the scope of the Departmental Policies for the provision of care in the inpatient and outpatient settings at UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Waterford.Provide thorough clinical evaluation, careful explanation to patients and family, and collaborative decision-making when necessary, for the proper delivery of surgical and medical services to the patients in our facility.Complete documentation of patients' assessment, history, and physical on admission, and write appropriate follow-up comments in case notes in line with the assessment of Patient Policy.Diagnose and treat patients under the direction of the relevant consultant.Initiate and monitor treatment as clinically appropriate and safe.Liaise with other clinical disciplines within the hospital (Anesthetists, Nursing, Diagnostic Services, Laboratory, Pharmacy) in relation to patient care.Respond to all Code Blues and lead the nursing staff in emergency/cardiac arrest procedures.Provide cover on a rostered basis to always ensure on-site RMO presence when there are patients being treated.
Participate in an on-call roster.Assist consultants in theatres when required.Health & Safety:Take reasonable care of your own Health and Safety and that of any other person who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work.Co-operate with UPMC in ensuring that statutory regulations, codes of practice, local policies, and departmental health and safety rules are adhered to.Not intentionally or recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health and safety.Infection Prevention and Control:Ensure that your work methods are compliant with UPMC's agreed policies and procedures and do not endanger other people or yourself.Be aware of infection prevention and control policies, practices, and guidelines appropriate for your duties and follow these to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of infection prevention and control policies, practices, and procedures through attendance at annual mandatory updates and ongoing continuing professional development.Challenge poor infection prevention and control practices of others and report any breaches using appropriate UPMC mechanisms (e.g., incident reporting policy).Information Governance:Comply with UPMC Information Governance policies and standards.Respect the confidentiality of any information you may encounter which identifies patients, employees, or other UPMC personnel, or business information of the Company.Ensure that all confidential information is always held securely, both on and off-site.Medication Management:Adhere to all Medication Policies relevant to your role.Verify and document patient's current medication on admission.Verify all prescribed medication.Provide medication advice to patients on discharge.Professional Standards and Performance Review:Participate in statutory and mandatory training as appropriate for the post.Maintain consistently high personal and professional standards and act in accordance with the relevant professional code of conduct.Take responsibility for the maintenance and improvement of personal and professional competence and encourage that of colleagues and subordinates.Participate in UPMC's appraisal processes including identifying performance standards for the post, personal objective setting, and the creation of a personal development plan.Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults:Identify and report abuse, ensuring early recognition to safeguard patients.Attend safeguarding awareness training and undertake any additional training relevant to your role.Social Responsibility:Support UPMC's contribution to society and reduce the environmental impact of activities.Quality & Safety:Work as part of a Multidisciplinary team in preparing for JCI accreditation.Provide high standards of patient care throughout your working day in pursuit of excellence.Quality Assurance:Participate in Quality Control functions as set down by the Medical Director.Education & Research:Participate in Departmental Educational Meetings and Mandatory Clinical and non-Clinical Training.Engage in research within the departmental framework and guidelines.Qualifications & Experience: Fully registered with the Irish Medical Council holding a valid registration.Current BLS and ACLS certification.Competent clinical and interactive skills with adult and pediatric patients.Effective team player both as a facilitator and in the course of work.Competent to work autonomously when required under consultant supervision/advice.Flexible and adaptable approach to work.Experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.Ability to prioritize and deliver to short deadlines.Evidence of continuing professional development.Equal Opportunity Statement and Benefits: UPMC is an equal opportunity employer.
