Trinity College Dublin- an introduction Post Summary The SO (RP) will be the designated Radiation Protection Officer for the University as defined by S.I. No. 30 of 2019 (IRR 19). The University undertakes a large number of research projects and teaching activities that involve the use of radioactive materials or radiation sources. The materials and sources range from small quantities of unsealed radioactive materials used in benchtop experiments through to High Activity Sealed Sources. Their use is governed by Licence L0032-04 which has been issued to the University by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). They will also coordinate and assist the 15 University Radiological Protection Supervisors (RPSs) to ensure the legislative requirements are managed and fulfilled. The University must operate in accordance with this Licence and to global best practice, to carry on the practice(s) of Use, Custody, Disposal, Exportation and Importation of these radioactive substances/nuclear devices and Irradiating apparatus. The role of the SO (RP) is to ensure that the conditions of the Licence are complied with through a University Safety Management programme in radiological protection. They will also offer advice and assistance in the procurement, use, management and disposal of sources. In addition, the individual is responsible for the reporting and co-ordination of data that must be reported on a monthly basis to EURATOM under the Safeguards Agreement (INFCIRC/193). This is a system of accounting for and controlling nuclear material in the material balance area (known as Trinity College). In addition to reporting process the SO (RP) must also facilitate unannounced inspections by EURATOM and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The implications of the failure of these inspections are certain areas of the university could be shut down. The SO (RP) will be required to participate in all aspects of the Safety Office activities but will be required specifically to co-ordinate the training programmes organised and delivered by the Safety Office. The Safety Officer (Radiological Protection) (SO (RP)) will be part of a small team of specialist safety professionals in the University Safety Office that advises Trinity and oversees the broader safety management programme. This role is a specific purpose contract to cover a career break. Post status: Specific Purpose Contract Hours of Post: 35 hours per week Salary: This appointment will be made on the Administrative 1 (Points 1-3), Salary Scale (€67,506 - €87,328 per annum) at a point in line with current Government pay policy. monthly/weekly payscales.
