Position Summary
The Datacenter Engineering Principal Electrical Engineer will be part of the team responsible for the development of Microsoft's industry-leading datacenter designs. The successful candidate will be a professional electrical engineer with extensive experience in datacenter electrical engineering, design, construction, and operations. The candidate will manage, review, and coordinate the delivery of complex datacenter electrical systems, power distribution systems, and backup power systems. This individual will manage external consultants, ensuring they engineer and design to Microsoft standards, and will conduct technical reviews of lease and colocation datacenters from external providers for compliance with Microsoft requirements.
Roles and Responsibilities Lead and direct consultants in the design and coordination of the electrical systems with other disciplines for our datacenter builds. Responsible for leading electrical workgroups with representatives from consulting firms and key stakeholders within Microsoft. Manage all power system designs during design stages, equipment procurement, bidding, manufacturing, delivery, and installation on site. Interface closely with procurement, manufacturers, and global/local engineering teams to deliver the electrical solutions for each project. Responsible for specification and design development, detailing the sequence of operation for the electrical systems. Conduct technical reviews and analysis of lease and colocation datacenter space for compliance with Microsoft requirements. Lead technical reviews with utility providers to complete reliability studies and support the Energy team with feasibility studies. Support the Energy team in energy applications by providing requirements in power demand and resiliency. Support the Site Selection team by validating electrical infrastructure arrangements and identifying power availability risks. Assist partner teams in reviewing electrical infrastructure upgrading scopes to raise site utilization. Assist in commissioning to validate performance, quality, and reliability. Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology. Professional Engineer in Electrical Engineering. A minimum of 15 years' experience in consulting engineering with at least 5 years as lead engineer. Minimum 5 years' experience with design, construction, operation, or maintenance of large-scale and complex electrical engineering systems. Ability to lead a team of engineers in advanced engineering processes related to large datacenter environments. Experience in designing, operating, and commissioning electrical distribution systems from high voltage to branch circuits. Experience with power system analysis and engineering software packages. Knowledge of mechanical and control systems related to datacenter environments. Ability to perform complex business case analyses to justify technical decisions. Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, and electrical switchgear. Excellent knowledge of building codes and regulations. Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and high-quality standards. Preferred, not required: Experience operating CAD, Sketchup, and/or BIM software for drawing review is desirable.
