Senior Research Technician

Inland Fisheries Ireland has a vacancy for a Senior Research Technician which is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated person, ideally with hands-on expertise in operating mass spectrometry instruments (or similar high precision instruments), to support applied fisheries research in Ireland.

The Senior Technician will be responsible for providing high quality technical services for IFI, specialising in ICPMS, as well as contributing at a high level to IFI's Fisheries Research and Monitoring function by managing and operating a dedicated high quality ICPMS laboratory, and managing related laboratory technical services. The role will support various IFI Research Division functions and programmes which feed into IFI's Corporate Plan objectives.

The ideal candidate will have relevant experience in an analytical laboratory with hands-on expertise in operating mass spectrometry instruments (or similar high precision instruments), and their supporting functions. They should be experienced in biological material sampling, sample processing, relevant data analysis and reporting. This role will include undertaking and managing day-to-day sampling for various programmes (including marine waters), sample processing, and preparation of various samples for ICPMS (in a highly controlled environments), and related biological analyses.

The post-holder will be responsible for data reduction and uncertainty calculations using appropriate software packages to deliver statistically robust outputs. Analysis and reporting of ICPMS and results of biological/ecological analyses will be a key requirement of this role.

Provide lead support on ICPMS projects. Undertake all ICPMS-related activities (sample preparation and analysis) and perform all data reduction, statistical analyses, and related reporting (such as results, publications and reports). Provision of outputs to support management and research priorities, including undertaking routine, and any novel applied fisheries research in this field. Provision of subject matter expert knowledge to maintain and advance research function in this arena. Undertake sampling of fish, as well as other relevant samples, using various techniques. Support of environmental/water monitoring capacity. Train and supervise any staff undertaking ICPMS-related duties. Maintain a safe working environment both in the laboratory and the field. KEY EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will have the following;

Essential A recognized third-level qualification in a relevant discipline (minimum NFQ Level 7) or equivalent. A minimum of 5 years relevant experience in an analytical laboratory with hands-on expertise in operating mass spectrometry instruments (or similar high precision instruments), and their supporting functions. Full proficiency in the MS Office suite; Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Demonstrable experience in the use of relevant statistical packages (eg. R, ICPMS data analysis software). Demonstrable experience in scientific report writing in the biological/ecological field. A full Category-B driving license that is valid in Ireland. Desirable A recognised Honours degree (NFQ Level 8) in a relevant discipline or equivalent. A minimum of 2 years work experience in the operation of an ICPMS precision instrument and its supporting functions. Experience of using a Laser Ablation platform combined with ICPMS. Practical experience in a biological/ecological field. Experience of working in water, working outdoors in all weathers and in small boats. Demonstrable experience in using GIS would be advantageous. KEY SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES The ideal candidate will have the following;

REMUNERATION The salary scale for the position is at the level of Senior Technician as applies in Inland Fisheries Ireland, it is an 8-point scale:

Point 1 €57,968; Point 2 €60,463; Point 3 €63,040; Point 4 €65,671; Point 5 €68,322; Point 6 €70,802; Point 7 €73,354; Point 8 €75,870 (IFI Senior Technician Grade Pay Scale as of 01.06.2024). Candidates should note that salary will not be subject to negotiation and the rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy. New entrants to the public sector will start on point 1 subject to Haddington Road Agreement and subsequent Government Agreements. TENURE This post is offered on a specified purpose contract basis linked to funding, expected to last up until 2027.
