Job Title:Temporary Part-time Consultant Occupational Health PhysicianReference No:08.016(2024)Department / Directorate: Occupational Health, HR DirectorateReports to:Consultant Occupational Health PhysicianTallaght University Hospital (TUH) is one of Ireland's largest acute teaching and learning hospitals, with adult, psychiatric and age-related healthcare on one site.
The Hospital has 450 inpatient adult beds, 74 onsite day beds for Dialysis, Oncology, Infusion, Haematology, Cardilogy, Bone & Joint and minor surgery services.
The Hospital also has a Day Surgery Centre located near the Hospital which has four theatres and 25 bays for elective surgery.
There are an additional 61 offsite beds under its governance.
The Hospital is staffed by over 3,500 people with 64 different nationalities represented on the team.
The Hospital is a provider of local, regional and national specialties.
It is a designated trauma unit incorporating the National Pelvic and Acetabular Unit, a national Urology Centre and the second largest provider of renal dialysis services in the country.
One of the two main academic teaching hospitals of Trinity College Dublin - TUH specialise in the training and professional development of staff in areas such as Medicine, Nursing, Health & Social Care Professionals, Emergency Medicine and Surgery, amongst many others.
TUH is part of the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group which serves a population of over 1.2 million across seven counties.

overview of role:Clinical Responsibilities: The successful candidate will maintain and develop quality occupational health services in line with best evidence-based practice and legal requirements, including (but not restricted to):Conduct independent medical assessment of health care workers referred through the agreed management referral process or the self-referral process.Provide clear, concise and timely advice on the effective rehabilitation of health care workers to management / HR.Liaise with all relevant stakeholders regarding staff immunisation including the introduction, development, evaluation and quality assurance of a comprehensive immunisation programme for healthcare workers.Oversee healthcare worker surveillance programmes within the Occupational Health Service.
Conduct medical assessments and reviews for the purposes of the HSE Critical Illness Protocol Provide clinical oversight in relation to Healthcare Workers and Exposure Prone Procedures and ensure evidence based practice is adhered to in relation to EPPProvide a specialist independent medical service on all matters relating to Occupational Health:Advise management on Occupational Health issues, including operation of relevant sections of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work ActsContribute to Health Promotion programmes for staff, in association with relevant departments and members of the relevant multidisciplinary teamsIdentify workplace hazards, undertake risk assessments and implement appropriate monitoring and control mechanisms, with multidisciplinary team members Participate in TUH / HSE hospital committees relating to staff safety, as required (e.g.
Health & Safety Committee, Radiation Protection Committee, Infection Prevention and Control Committee, Risk Management Committee and others as designated).Administrative & Managerial ResponsibilitiesThe Occupational Health Physician will:Be responsible for oversight and governance of the multidisciplinary Occupational Health Service teams for the coordination of OHS servicesManage the Occupational Health Service and supervise staff assigned to the Unit, with due regard to interfacing / liaising with relevant professional reporting relationships.Contribute to service planning and advise on modernisation of the Occupational Health Services in the context of national developments and policies in Occupational Health and Sláintecare.Work with the multidisciplinary Occupational Health Team to optimise skill mix and staffing requirements.Training & EducationThe Occupational Health Physician will: Ensure that the Occupational Health Service meets the necessary criteria to be an approved training site for Specialist Registrars, as defined by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) Provide Clinical Supervision for Specialist Registrars in Occupational Health, Faculty of Occupational Medicine, RCPI Participate in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the department and across TUH.Data and Research The successful candidate willFacilitate production of all data / information required to validate delivery of duties and to inform planning of the service delivery.Undertake regular evaluation of the effectiveness of the service Undertake the development of appropriate audit systems in accordance with the TUH clinical governance structure and corporate policies / proceduresDevelop and coordinate clinical, laboratory and other research as appropriate to the Specialty of Occupational Medicine at local, regional and national levels.Skills competencies & KnowledgeProfessional Qualifications and ExperienceCandidates should, on the latest date for receiving completed applications for the post:Hold registration on the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland, in the specialist division for Occupational Health Medicine; And Possess the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

Participate in teaching, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and conference commitments of the department and of the Hospital for medical, nursing and other staff.Reward & Recognition Remuneration is in accordance with the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales, of 1st June 2024, €165,188 – 198,226 pro rata.The appointment is temporary part-time and pensionable for 2 yearsThe annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata.
The leave year runs from 1st April to the 31st of March each yearNormal working hours are one day per week – (7.4 hours).
Your contracted hours may be liable to change between the hours of 8 am to 8 pm over 7 days to meet the requirements for extended day services in accordance with the terms of the Framework Agreement
