IMaR Research Centre Research Assistant: Software Engineer (Industrial Systems) The Munster Technological University- Tralee has established a world-class research centre in the area of Intelligent Mechatronics and Radio-frequency identification (RFID), i.e.
The Intelligent Mechatronics and RFID Centre (The IMaR Centre).
The principal theme of the IMaR Research Centre is the synergy between mechatronics, Sensors, RFID, Internet of Things (IoT) and Data Analytics for industrial applications driven by new technology, innovation and global demand.
IMaR consists of two research strands Intelligent Mechatronics and Industrial IoT & Data Analytics both focused on the delivery of a wide range of automation, identification and manufacturing services.
The overall mission of the IMaR Centre is to be industries partner of choice for the provision of innovative applied research.
The IMaR Centre will serve a cross section of industries including Automotive, Telecommunications, Pharmaceutical, Production / Manufacturing, Retail, Aeronautical, Environmental, healthcare and Agri-business.
The centre is core funded by Enterprise Ireland and houses stateof-the-art research facilities.
The overall mission of the IMaR Centre is to be industries partner of choice for the provision of innovative applied research.
The IMaR Centre will serve a cross section of industries including Automotive, Telecommunications, Pharmaceutical, Production / Manufacturing, Aeronautical, Environmental, healthcare and Agri-business.
IMaR is also a member of Lero:- The Irish software research centre.
Position We are looking for an experienced Researcher in the area of software development/engineering to join the research team at IMaR.
The successful candidate will collaboratively work and contribute to a cutting-edge research project for re-manufacturing process design and optimisation and machine monitoring in the manufacturing domain.
The Researcher will have a track record of research and development in the area of software development / engineering and an appreciation of relevant state of the art software.
The Researcher will have experience in industry or academia (or equivalent) in the area of software development and engineering and will work within a team of Software, Mechatronic and Control engineers in the development of a prototype remanufacturing system with several diverse processes along with some manual process tasks for which advanced monitoring, analysis and tracking capabilities are to be researched and developed.
The successful candidate will, in collaboration with other researchers, design and implement project tasks and will play a key role within the team in the delivery of critical tasks including development of software systems to monitor, log and analyse the re-manufacturing process.
The candidate will be responsible for, as part of a team: Development of functional requirements specifications, in collaboration with the research team including the industrial partners, Research and development manufacturing monitoring and analytics system (software) Contribute to outline manufacturing line monitoring system design concepts and progress to detailed / optimised layout, Industrial traceability systems development Data capture and analysis systems, integration and testing Providing support to collaborating researchers, working with IMaR and the industry partner to deliver a robust, configurable and effective prototype system, Contributing to project documentation including, risk management, version control control and effectively disseminating the research results.
Qualifications and Experience Applicants are required to have a minimum of a Level 8 degree in addition to experience in an industrial or academic setting in the area of software development, software engineering or computer science.
The candidate will have a degree in software development, software engineering, computer science or another relevant engineering / science degree.
A level 9 Masters qualification in a related discipline or relevant research and development experience would also be of benefit for this position .
Candidates must also demonstrate the following: Strong software development skills o Windows Systems Administration o Basic Linux Systems Administration Good knowledge of networking and network troubleshooting.
Data Management Familiarity with database systems (SQL, NoSQL) for creating and maintaining data management and analysis systems.
Experience integrating data from multiple sources, including IoT, Human Entry and machines Data Analysis and Lifecycle Modelling Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to process historical and live data.
Familiarity with statistical tools and libraries, (for example, R, Python with pandas, NumPy).
Proven ability to develop data models.
Software development Experience with data processing and automation pipelines, (for example, Python, MATLAB).
Knowledge of version control systems (Git) for collaborative work.
Visualisation and reporting o Clear, concise documentation of methodologies, results, and lifecycle models.
o Familiarity with interactive data visualisation tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, etc) for designing dashboards to present battery performance and lifecycle insights.
The following skills / attributes are desirable: Experience of software Development with NodeJS & PHP Some basic electrical knowledge Basic understanding of battery systems A Knowledge of industrial communication protocols like CAN and MODbus A strong knowledge of MQTT machine to machine network protocol would be an advantage Knowledge of other Networking and ISP Facing Protocols (TCP/IP, UDP/IP, PPPoE, et) A knowledge of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies and software Proven ability to develop data models using machine learning frameworks for battery degradation and lifecycle prediction Familiarity with manufacturing technologies and manufacturing management software systems.
Basic knowledge of battery management systems (BMS).
An ability to progress, on time and on budget, product ideas / technical concepts to prototype/final systems and work as part of a team to achieve this.
A strong interest in emerging technologies and a strong motivation to develop a personal research profile and to contribute to the ongoing success of the IMaR Research Centre.
Duration of Contract:This position is for a fixed-term 33 month contract.
Salary: An attractive salary on the IUA Research Assistant scale will apply to this post, dependant on the candidates experience and qualifications.

Occasional visits to Munster Technological University Kerry campus will also be required.
