Tyndall is currently leveraging our core strengths in Information and Communications Technologies to develop the next generation of intelligent medical devices and systems.
A significant part of this activity is focussed on the development of wearable technologies for applications in transdermal delivery, diagnostics and smart woundcare.
The Tyndall National Institute is now seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team in this exciting and rapidly expanding R&D field, primarily to work on rapid prototyping of the devices that will underpin the next generation of wearable and transdermal technologies.
Purpose of the Role Tyndall National Institute now invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Researcher in the Life Sciences Interface Group.
In collaboration with European research institutes and industrial partners, this is an exciting opportunity for you to help implement applied research in a fast-moving area.
You will work closely with a multidisciplinary, industry-aligned team of researchers with a focus on developing the sensor and actuator technologies that will subsequently be merged with microcontroller-based circuits, low power wearable devices, and embedded systems.
This is a hands-on, laboratory-based role, in which you will design, prototype and test a range of devices including drug delivery systems, biosensors and smart dressings.
Your activities will also include aspects of project management and researcher supervision.
The position is likely to involve some international travel to project meetings at customer/partner sites, and to international conferences and workshops.
In return, you will have the opportunity to develop innovative solutions for medical technology challenges, as well as to gain valuable experience in the development of next-generation devices and systems.
The successful candidate will experience the excitement of working with high-profile industry on emerging technologies and will have the opportunity to build the career profile associated with this activity.
Key Responsibilities The candidate will be required to: Review the state-of-the-art in transdermal interface technologies on an ongoing basis; Assess and use microfabrication techniques such as 3D printing, moulding, cutting, bonding and coating to develop and fabricate a range of components; Develop microcontroller-based embedded systems for device control and readout; Construct demonstrator devices for applications in drug delivery, diagnostics, medical devices and smart woundcare; Perform biomechanical and reliability testing, using skin samples and skin substitutes to validate performance under laboratory conditions; Work closely with other team members, both internal and external, who will be developing complementary aspects of the platforms; Internally and externally showcase project results; Report results to team leaders, commercial partners and funding agencies; Investigate commercialisation and exploitation opportunities for the technologies; Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
