Senior Laboratory Technician/Andrologist The National Cattle Breeding Centre (NCBC) is Irelands largest supplier of bull semen to the domestic and international markets.
The central laboratory is based in Naas where bull semen is processed and stored.
NCBC are also responsible for the genomic selection of bulls for both beef and dairy breeding programs.
NCBC are actively involved in research and development and work in collaboration with many Universities and state agencies to progress science within this field.
Job Description: We are currently recruiting a Senior Laboratory technician/Andrologist in our busy bull semen processing laboratory.
This person will assist in all aspects of the daily production process, specifically preparing and freezing semen for use in artificial insemination.
Job Specification: Preparation of media batches and aliquoting, daily maintenance of laboratory equipment and consumables.
Stock control and monitoring.
Semen handling towards estimating sperm volumes and concentration, semen dilution, use of straw filling and labelling machinery, straw freezing and movements through liquid nitrogen.
Subjective and computer assisted semen analysis for motility, morphology and viability.
Database entry, tracking and recording of batches, compliance with legislation pertaining to disease control with the Department of Agriculture, adherence to quality procedures for ISO:9001:2015 standards, general laboratory cleaning and duties as required by the laboratory manager.
Assistance in the administration and running of the Genomic selection programmes.
Specific Requirements: Previous laboratory experience to include pipetting, aliquoting and sterile techniques.
Knowledge and compliance with quality systems and ISO:9001/2015 standards.
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Office and database systems.
Interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
Excellent time management skills and highly organised.
University Degree in Agricultural Science or equivalent.
Attention to detail and ability to follow laboratory procedures/protocols.
Desirable: Previous experience of semen assessment and andrology training.
Masters qualification in andrology or similar specialisation.
Knowledge of the cattle breeding industry, agriculture and genomics.
Handling of cryogenic material (liquid nitrogen).
