Senior Process Engineer – Silicon & MEMSContract: Full Time/Fixed Term
Role Description The Special Projects and Services Group/Unit/Division provides semiconductor processing services to internal and external researchers across a very wide range of technologies.
This position offers the opportunity to widen knowledge and experience with many exciting technology challenges.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager for Silicon & MEMS, the Senior Process Engineer will be responsible for developing, optimizing, and sustaining advanced cleanroom processes for Silicon and MEMS wafer fabrication.
The role requires a broad and deep understanding of process engineering, with the flexibility to work across various fabrication areas including (but not limited to) etching, deposition, thermal processes, and metrology.
The individual will contribute to R&D and commercial projects, mentor team members, and lead technical innovation.
Key Responsibilities Oversee operational and engineering activities within the Silicon & MEMS cleanrooms, supporting diverse fabrication processes.Develop, optimize, and implement processes across various technologies to meet R&D and commercial requirements.Work collaboratively with equipment maintenance teams to ensure optimal tool performance and availability.Lead troubleshooting, problem-solving, and continuous improvement initiatives across all process areas.Provide technical training and support for cleanroom users, including postgraduate researchers and technical staff.Create and maintain compliance documentation, such as risk assessments (RAs) and standard operating procedures (SOPs), ensuring Health & Safety standards are met.Manage project deliverables for internal and external stakeholders, including scheduling, resource planning, and reporting.Act as a liaison for customers, translating requirements into practical and innovative fabrication solutions.Promote process excellence by implementing best practices and sharing knowledge across teams.Mentor and coach team members, fostering professional growth and enhancing team capabilities.Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.Essential Criteria MSc Degree in Engineering, Science or a related discipline or equivalent experience.Typically, a minimum of 5 years experience in semiconductor wafer process engineering in a commercial or R&D fabrication environment, with hands-on involvement in process development and optimization.Strong technical skills (>3 years experience in, and demonstrated development of), in at least three fabrication areas e.g.
etching, deposition, thermal processing, metrology, or related semiconductor fabrication processes.Proven success in managing and delivering technical projects, with specific examples of scheduling, resource management, and achieving project goals.Experience creating and maintaining compliance documents (e.g., RAs, SOPs) and ensuring adherence to Health & Safety standards.Evidence of strong organizational skills, handling competing demands, and meeting deadlines (e.g., workflow improvements, cross-functional projects).Effective communication skills, with examples of mentoring or training others, presenting technical results, or customer interactions.Desirable Criteria Evidence of entrepreneurial experience.Evidence of creative skills/creativity.Strong technical experience in plasma etch and deposition processing.Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies and software tools.Familiarity with advanced semiconductor processes such as Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), Atomic Layer Etch (ALE), or high-resolution lithography.Prior experience using electronic workflow systems for process monitoring, SPC charts, and documentation control.Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex process challenges, using data-driven approaches and collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams.A demonstrated ability to drive continuous improvement initiatives, enhancing both process capability and operational efficiency.A track record of fostering collaboration across teams and external stakeholders.Salary and Appointment Details Appointment may be made on the Senior Technical Officer Scale B salary scale € 64,587- € 75,961 per annum.
Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
